I have three things to share with you today, one that made me cry, one that made me want to kick, scream and swear and a final that inspired me.
#1 From Little Things Big Things Grow Paul Kelly writes that 'From Little Things Big Things Grow', and he couldn't be more correct, it is from the littlest things that bigger things grow- things that may in fact change the world. I read about a young lady yesterday who is doing just that, changing the world. Tara June Winch is a single mother of Aboriginal, Afghan and English heritage. She grew up in Wollongong, Australia and published her first novel 'Swallow the Air' at 22 years of age. Tara is now busily working on the One Thousand Project that is seeking 1000 inspirational female writers from around the world to help develop the writing and reading skills of girls everywhere. Literacy gives girls power, it means we have a voice, it means we can communicate, connect and ignite change; It also means that we can help to alleviate poverty and make the world a more peaceful place.
#2 The Freedom Writers It was yesterday, on the couch, alone, with tea and chocolate that I watched the film Freedom Writers. This film is amazing, not for the acting, the music or the special effects, but simply for the story it tells, about how important education can be and that if you believe in someone, that person will start to believe in themselves. It is based on a true story, about a group of kids living in Long Beach, USA. The kids have three things in common: they hate school, they hate the teacher, and they hate each other. This story is about change. It inspires me to want to be a teacher, or not even a teacher, but a believer. Someone who believes in the talents and capabilities of others- that will in turn encourage others to achieve their potential.
#3 All Girls Are Precious Set in Harlem, USA Precious tells the story of of a sixteen year old girl’s hardship, anger, frustration and loneliness of living alone with her abusive mother with her second baby on the way. Precious frustrated me, it made me angry but it also inspired me. Precious like Freedom Writers showed how important education is. If you can read and write and learn new things you can achieve anything, despite the difficulties ahead of you. Precious finishes with the words 'All Girls Are Precious' - and yes we are. So continue to learn, continue to read, write, but also help others to read, write and learn, because it is the simple little things that allow for big things to grow. Happy Sunday x
