For Schools

22 year old Erin Young developed REAL magazine in response to the growing number of young women suffering from low self esteem, anxiety, depression, body image disorders, self harm and addictions.

Erin is the Editor and Director of the quarterly publication as well as a Project Consultant for YWCA Victoria.

Erin is passionate about working with young women and inspiring them to achieve their potential.

Her workshops are innovative, practical and specifically tailored to female students in years seven, eight, nine and ten.

Workshop #1 Getting REAL About Our Bodies (1 hour / 2 hours)

An honest and personal exploration into the issues of body image in young women provides a platform for discussion that will centre on students experiences, understandings and ideas of the ideal body shape and size.

Student’s will discover the influence of popular media on their self image and learn about the mechanics of digital manipulation.

Throughout the workshop students will engage in several key activities. They will be encouraged to broaden their ideas about beauty and body image.

The aim of the workshop is to foster within young women a strong sense of self respect and to provide them with the practical skills necessary to deal with the negative images often associated with body size and shape.

Workshop #2 REAL Acts of Change (3 hours / 6 hours)

Why do we initiate change?

Passion. Care. Commitment.

REAL Acts of Change provides students with an interactive forum to discuss significant youth issues such as body image, bullying, climate change, binge drinking and violence against women.

Students will explore several methods that have been successfully applied to ignite change at local and global levels in Australia.

The students will discuss issues directly impacting on the youth in their communities and create an action plan that can be effectively implemented to produce a positive change.

REAL Acts of Change aims to empower students by giving them the necessary skills and motivation to take leadership roles in their communities and schooling environments.
